I just got back from my daughter's school where her first grade teacher was having "Doughnuts with Dads." Six weeks ago, when I first heard about it, I was excited. I love my daughter. I love doughnuts. Hang out for a few minutes with my daughter in her classroom--showing off her work, eating doughnuts... It seemed like the perfect combination.

Four weeks ago I started my health reformation and new diet plan. And this morning as I was getting dressed, I contemplated if I should even go. I don't want to be antisocial. I don't want to seem ungrateful or appreciative. And when everyone is eating doughnuts may not be the best time to explain the finer points of my diet plan.

Day 21

How do you rewire yourself, so that bad habits are replaced with new, good ones?? I've always heard it takes 21 days to write a new habit into your life. I've even been inclined to believe it. But on Day 21 of my journey to better health, I'm not at all convinced that I've formed any new habits.
So that got me reading and researching. The idea of 21 days of a certain task leading to a new habit being formed, is largely a myth. The myth comes from the research of plastic surgeon, Maxwell Maltz, who in the 1950s noticed a pattern among his patients. He wrote that he noticed it took patients about 21 days to become accustomed to their new face, or after an amputation, about 21 days for the patient to adjust to their new situation.

I'm at Olive Garden starring at the menu. My family have all already ordered. Now they are waiting on me so the server can go. The server is trying to be helpful but doesn't know me, my likes, or even my health plan. For the first time in my life, I truly don't know what I want or what to order. Normally I'd order the Fettuccine Alfredo with steamed broccoli or maybe some Penne Pasta with a 1/2 Alfredo and 1/2 Marinara. But not today. Those are not approved in my health plan. Neither are breadsticks. So I stare as the patience of my family wavers. I'm a vegetarian, which adds a degree of difficulty to the process--and here we are. A crossroads in my health plan.

Some weeks ago, my wife and I decided to get control of our health. When we got married, I weighed in at about 190 pounds. Twenty years later I stepped on the scale and it coughed and muttered, "One at a time please!" That's when I decided enough was enough. About the same time, a friend of mine sent me a book about being more healthy. The junction of her care and my concern, coupled with my wife's personal desire to change her lifestyle, put me over the top. I came face to face with the reality that I don't sleep well. I have aches and pains. I can't keep up with my kids. My blood pressure has been borderline high. I often need or want a nap to get through my day. I realized, I was getting by, but I wasn't really living.

Day 1

Just a note to say life is changing for me today. And they say journaling helps so you can see where you’ve been. So here is Day 1: (don’t worry, I’m not journaling everything here, just want everyone to be aware so that if I don’t eat everything at potluck you won’t be offended! 😬). I'm not even posting the before picture I just took. I look angry and obviously not happy. I'm sure I'll show it when I realize the results I'm looking for. Anyway, I’m overhauling my lifestyle and my diet with a specific diet and health plan. I’m going to live healthier, eat healthier, and lose weight so I can feel better, live better and serve better. My kids say I’ll be able to chase them better. Ok. I’m in. ‬
